Monetizing Trace is a poetic meditation on the ephemerality of individual trees in managed forests and their subsequent transformation from tree to timber to commodity. Using US dollars bills to create a folded paper tree simulates and abstracts the form of a pine tree. On the walls of the installation, a forest of origami trees recalls the gridded pine plantation, the ubiquitous forest of the southern US. Sawdust trunk prints reference the material trace of harvested trees. Monetizing Trace complicates the managed forest as a site that functions as nature/commodity/ruin, inviting viewers to recognize and own their role in the consumption of trees.
